12 South

12 South is Nashville's boutique row: shops and cafes along 12th Avenue South, running down to Sevier Park. Reese Witherspoon and Dolly Parton have both planted flags on the strip.

A streetcar line down Granny White Pike, now 12th Avenue South, built this strip around 1900. After decades of mid-century decline, developers and neighborhood investors rebuilt it through the 1990s.

Sevier Park's centerpiece is Sunnyside, a mansion built around 1852 for Mary Childress Benton. The Battle of Nashville swept past in December 1864, and minie-ball scars still mark the porch door and columns.

Dolly bought a pre-war commercial building on the avenue in 1989 and gave it a Mission-style makeover, red tile roofs and fiberglass cacti included. Inca-Hoots is still her production and management office.

Reese chose the strip for Draper James's first brick-and-mortar store, opened in the fall of 2015. The label is named for her grandparents, Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon.

The first “I Believe in Nashville” mural went up here in March 2012, Adrien Saporiti's riff on the Tennessee flag. It has appeared on Instagram over 1 million times.

Holly Williams, Hank Williams Jr.'s daughter, opened White's Mercantile in a former gas station at the strip's south end in 2013. The general store is named for Warren and June White, her mother's parents.
