The Gulch

Nashville's old rail yard, rebuilt into its glassiest quarter: condo towers, celebrity storefronts, and the Thompson hotel's rooftop bar L.A. Jackson, with the South's first LEED-ND neighborhood certification earned in 2009.

The first locomotive reached Nashville in the 1850s through this low cut, which gave the Gulch its name. Union Station opened above the yards in 1900, and a golden age of rail followed.

The highways drained the rail business, and the last passenger train left Union Station in 1978. In 1999 MarketStreet Enterprises bought 25 acres of the old yards south of Broadway.

Kristin Cavallari, of Laguna Beach and The Hills, opened Uncommon James's first-ever store here in March 2018, with the jewelry brand's offices running out of the back.

Country singer Jessie James Decker followed: her Kittenish boutique, the brand's first brick-and-mortar store, opened its doors at noon on February 16, 2019.

Kelsey Montague painted the angel wings here in 2016, and the selfie line became a weekend fixture. Taylor Swift later commissioned another Montague mural in the Gulch to promote her Lover lead single.

The Station Inn, a bluegrass room open since 1974, moved onto 12th Avenue South in 1978, decades before the towers. Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, and Reba McEntire have all played it.
