Josh Turner's House

Josh Turner is the country baritone from Hannah, South Carolina, who broke out with “Long Black Train” in 2003. Vince Gill inducted him into the Grand Ole Opry in 2007, among its youngest members.

College Grove was settled around 1800 by the Allison, Cannon, Ogilvie, and Wilson families, and went by Harpeth, then Poplar Grove, before the current name arrived with the post office in 1860.

Cary and Winn Male Academy opened in 1859 on land James Allison donated. Stagecoaches served the village until 1905, and the Bank of College Grove followed in 1911.

Turner bought this cattle farm south of Nashville in 2008 and finished a new main house on the land in 2010. The property carries 2 residences plus a set of detached garages.

He spent 2 years building a log writing cabin on the farm, taking the key in December 2010. He built it, in his words, “to inspire myself, and my co-writers.”

The first song written there, in January 2011, was “Moses,” about losing his dog. He wrote or co-wrote 8 of the 11 tracks on 2012's Punching Bag inside the cabin.

Co-writers began asking to work at the cabin instead of on Music Row. In 2012 he joked, “Maybe College Grove will be the new Music Row?”
