Nancy Pelosi's House

Nancy Pelosi has represented San Francisco in the House since 1987 and was the first woman elected Speaker, holding the gavel from 2007 to 2011 and 2019 to 2023. This Georgetown waterfront condo is her home when Congress sits.

Washington Harbour rose on the site of an abandoned cement plant after a 7-year zoning fight over the Georgetown waterfront. Demolition began in November 1981, and the first phase opened on June 13, 1986.

Architect Arthur Cotton Moore, a sixth-generation Washingtonian, drew the 2 curved towers in a postmodern collage of styles. National Gallery director Carter Brown called it “Xanadu on the Potomac,” and Moore designed Georgetown’s Canal Square too.

Nancy and Paul Pelosi bought the unit in 1999 from the Seagram liquor company. Paul alone appears as owner in the District’s property tax database, and Seagram is still listed on a garage space here.

In April 2011 the Potomac rose about 12 feet and not all of the complex’s flood walls went up, a first in its history. Sequoia took on water, and condo residents left when the power failed.

The condos share the site with an office and retail half that sits on its own tax lot. The District’s ownership layer records that half changing hands in August 2018 for $415M, its latest sale on the books.

After the flood the owners spent $30M rebuilding the plaza, and in November 2012 an ice rink replaced the old fountain, the largest rink in the city. Fabio Trabocchi’s Fiola Mare opened downstairs in 2013.
