Where Gavin Newsom Lives: Based in Kentfield, With Fair Oaks for Sale
Gavin Newsom's family has been based in Kentfield, in Marin County, since 2024. The Fair Oaks estate he bought as governor is for sale; his first Kentfield house sold in 2021.
Gavin Newsom's family has based itself in Kentfield, a town in Marin County north of San Francisco, since buying a house there in November 2024, The San Francisco Standard reported at the time and Hoodline repeated in 2026. His office said then that the family would split its time between Marin and Sacramento counties. In August 2026, with his second term as California's 40th governor ending in January 2027, they put the Fair Oaks estate outside Sacramento up for sale.
The page that stood at this URL in 2023 called Fair Oaks his current home and the earlier Kentfield house contemporary. The first is no longer true, and the second is a style label we correct below.
We do not print the street address, and here is why. The Fair Oaks estate's county record is on Gavin Newsom's Fair Oaks home profile.
The county record for the estate he bought as governor, and the map.
The house the family bought in Kentfield in 2024 is a different one from the 1950 house described below, and this page says nothing more about it. Newsom is a sitting governor, so we say no more.
Fair Oaks: bought in 2018, for sale in 2026
The Newsoms bought the Fair Oaks estate in December 2018 for $3.7 million, weeks before he was sworn in, according to Hoodline and the Press Democrat. Fair Oaks is a suburb of Sacramento. The family passed on the Victorian Governor's Mansion downtown, and a spokesman called the suburban house “more kid-friendly” for the couple's four young children, CBS reported in January 2019.
Sacramento County's parcel records add what the press did not. The grant deed now on the estate, the document that transfers ownership, was recorded in October 2019, 10 months after the December 2018 purchase the press reported. The county withholds owners' names from its public map data, so the record itself names nobody.
The purchase ran through an LLC, a limited liability company, which is a business entity that can own a house in its own name. Its manager was Newsom's cousin Jeremy Scherer, his partner in the PlumpJack wine and restaurant group, according to the SF Standard and Hoodline. The arrangement drew an ethics complaint from the California Republican Party, CapRadio reported. In August 2021 the Fair Political Practices Commission, the state agency that enforces ethics rules for California officials, closed it. In a letter CapRadio quoted, the commission found the payments for the house “emanated from either Newsom himself or an exempted family member.”
On August 24, 2026, the Newsoms put the estate up for sale at $7.5 million through Sotheby's International Realty, about twice what they paid, as the SF Standard, Hoodline and Newsweek reported. Newsweek dates the house to 1984 and calls its style Santa Barbara-inspired. Our 2023 page said 1985.
No sale has been reported as of October 2026. When we last checked Sacramento County's records, in late September, no newer deed had recorded.
Kentfield, 2011 to 2021: a 1950 Worley Wong house
Before Sacramento, the family's home was in Marin. Newsom and his wife, the documentary filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom, bought a house in Kentfield in 2011, his first year as lieutenant governor, for $2.2 million, the price the Press Democrat and the SF Standard both give.
The house dates to 1950. It was designed by the San Francisco architect Worley Wong, and by 2019 the architect Julie Dowling had remodeled it, the Press Democrat reported. That makes the original a midcentury modern, the low, glass-walled style of postwar California. Our 2023 page called it contemporary.
The family moved to Fair Oaks in early 2019 and put the Kentfield house on the market within weeks. It took until May 2021 to sell. SFist reported the sale was off-market, meaning it closed without the house being publicly for sale, and that it came to light in August, weeks before Newsom survived the September 2021 recall election, a statewide vote on whether to remove him from office. The price depends on whom you read: $5,895,000, according to the Press Democrat and KRON4, which cited Realtor.com, or $5.695 million, according to SFist, citing records SFGate reviewed.
